WHY THIS BLOG?

The Israeli–Palestinian conflict is the ongoing struggle between Israelis and Palestinians. It has been referred to as the world’s “most intractable conflict“, with the ongoing Israeli occupation.

Some facts:

For a long time Arabs and Jews lived peaceful together in the region of Palestina. In 1917 over 600.000 Palestinians and 56.000 Jews lived in the region Palestina.
In 1923, Great Britain was given the mandate of (historic) Palestine.
Various zionist movements organised massive immigration to Palestina. In response the Arab people revolted.
The 1936–1939 Arab revolt was a nationalist uprising by Palestinian Arabs in Mandatory Palestine against the British administration of the Palestine Mandate, demanding Arab independence and the end of the policy of open-ended Jewish immigration and land purchases with the stated goal of establishing a “Jewish National Home”.
During World War II approximately 6 million Jews were murdered by the Nazis. A lot of holocaust survivers immigrated to Palestina.
In 1947 aproximately 650.000 (30%) Jews lived in Palestine, 70% of the population were Palestinian (1.3 million Arabs). The Jews lived in a relatively small part of Palestine: less than 7% of the country of Palestine.
15 May 1948 David Ben-Gurion proclaimed the state of Israel. A war broke out and in June 1948 Israël controlled over 78% of Palestine.
In 1967, the Palestinians lost the remaining 22% of their country: the start of the occupation of the West bank and the Gaza Strip and the rise of settlements in occupied territory.
The international community considers the establishment of Israeli settlements in the Israeli-occupied territories illegal under international law, violating Article 49 of the Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949.
Recently (november 2019) the United States announced that it no longer views settlements as ‘inconsistent with international law‘.

What happened to the Jews was horrible. The world failed in preventing the holocaust and saving the lifes of millions of Jewish people. Until this moment there’s still a great feeling of guilt about that.

What happens now to the Palestinians is horrible too. They had to leave their homes and cannot return until this day. Refugees camps are exploding and the circumstances are really bad.

But how many people know about these facts? And dare to stand up? That is not easy: there is a fear of being classed as anti-semitist. And Arabs and Palestinians are often being framed as dangerous and violent. So, the unrealistic framing continues.
